Toward an Outstanding Center for Structural Biology in Tsukuba
Kazuo Hurakami
Center for Tsukuba Advanced Research Alliance and Institute of Applied Biochemistry, University of Tsukuba
Molecular biology including recombinant DNA technology has been feasible
to elucidate primary structure of proteins and their genes easily.
On the other hand, it is still very difficult to obtain three-
dimensional structure of the above important molecules.
Fortunately, Tsukuba Advanced Research Alliance (TARA) Center has
the following prestiges for developing the area of structure biology
including the X-ray and NHR analysis of proteins in future.
- World famous photon factory for X-ray analysis in Institute of High
Energy Physics is very close to our TARA center.
- Dr. Noriyoshi Sakabe, a famous professor in the X-ray analysis of
proteins started his TARA project in April, 1995, in the strong
collaboration among our university, Institute of High Energy Physics
and many companies.
- Dr. Hitsuhiko Ikura, an excellent professor in the NHR analysis of
proteins has been appointed as a TARA professor. His TARA project
will start in April, 1996.
These advantages are enable to establish an outstanding center for
a stractural biology center as a sub-center of TARA center in our
unlversnty.
